A WATERCOLOR WASH is a technique used with water-based, transparent paint. A wash creates atmosphere and color within a painting without making many specific and descriptively detailed brushstrokes. A large soft brush is used with very wet brushstrokes to make areas where the colored pigment in the paint diffuses and flows throughout the painted shape. Some examples of washes:
