RELIEF SCULPTURE
Sculpture made with a flat side from which the dimensional parts stand out. Relief sculpture is often used to decorate architecture and household objects.
Types of Relief Sculpture
High Relief Forms are shown with high depth, usually coming out half way or more.
Low Relief / Bas Relief Forms are shown in with some raised areas but doesn't have very much depth.
Intaglio / Sunken Relief Images are carved into the surface, leaving the background space intact
UTILITARIAN SCULPTURE
When an object is made to have a USE and also be a work of visual art, it is called UTILITARIAN. Things like vases, furniture, jewelry, and coins are utilitarian art.
NON-UTILITARIAN SCULPTURE
When a sculpture is made to be appreciated visually only and does not have another function or use, it is considered "non-utilitarian."
