What we will do... This year in Grade 6 we will be exploring themes of symbolism, gesture, and narrative using a variety of art materials including clay, watercolor, pastel, and mixed media art. We will learn about the language of visual art and design, and learn how to apply this knowledge to our artwork to make it "say" exactly what we want to communicate. We will explore different ways of making art, too, including projects dealing with observation (looking), imagination (dreaming something up from our minds), and combining both ways of working together in new ways. Our projects will also touch on art history as we look at how the tradition of art began and how it grew throughout the ancient world. All this while having fun learning about, and from, each other! Visit here for a sample of what the year *might* look like. Remember though, we are all artists and changes can happen based on how the year unfolds!
What YOU need to do for class: Bring a PENCIL to every class. An eraser is good too! Coming prepared with the most versatile drawing tool in the world is the first step in becoming an accomplished artist, and lets you be ready to learn and create right away.
Come mentally prepared to explore -- to learn new ideas, to listen and talk respectfully with others, to experiment, and to see what you can do when you really try!
Finish assigned projects. Do your best on each project we create and you will amaze yourself! "You only get out of it what you put into it.
Portfolio Art "Homework" Project: You will have art homework, but it hopefully should be fun to do and will provide you with creative breaks in your regular homework schedule. Artists learn most by DOING and I will provide you with opportunities to shine. I hope you take them! Participation in the Portfolio Art Homework project is reflected in the EFFORT comment you receive on your report card. You will not fail if you don't do "homework," but you certainly won't learn and grow as much as you would if you did participate.
