PROJECT GOALS: 1. to review art principles and art elements 2. to work with "visual weight," and create balance in a design featuring images of different qualities 3. to create a sense of UNITY within a mixed media piece through choices of art elements and use of art principles 4. to work with personally interesting imagery using a range of individually preferred techniques
ASSIGNMENT STEPS: 1. Choose a photograph you find interesting from a magazine or newspaper, or print one off the computer. Select part of the image and cut or tear it out. You can use more than one part of the original image if you'd like. 2. Plan where on your background paper the cut image will be, and develop a drawing around it so that you are completing the scene or giving the object a new, interesting context. You can attach the image first, or just trace around it so you know where it will be and attach it later. 3. Develop the drawing so that it is strong enough to balance with the photograph. After sketching out your idea, you can use any media you like including colored pencils, markers, crayons, pastels, watercolor paint, ball point pen, ink, etc. to develop the shapes and lines to be stronger and have more visual weight. Look for how surface textures are working together, and see if it is balanced and unified. 4. After you have reached the first point of finishing, pair up with a partner and carefully look at the art in terms of its design. Use the COMPOSITION CRITIQUE GRID to look for things to add to the design to make the parts more balanced and the piece more visually interesting. Document partner feedback on your assignment sheet. 5. When you are sure the piece is complete, answer the review questions on your assignment sheet and turn in your work.

REVIEW QUESTIONS: 1. What is the title of your artwork? Be creative and come up with a title that gives the piece meaning. 2. What was the most helpful piece of feedback you received while doing this project? Who was it from, and how did it help you? 3. Identify and describe three art principles and how they are working in your artwork. Identify the elements that the principles are using. Underline the ART ELEMENT ONCE and hte ART PRINCIPLE TWICE. Examples: "There is color balance between the large green shape on the right and the green grassy texture on the left." "There is movement because the curvy shapes cross the page in two directions." "There is contrast between the white corner and the black foreground shape." 4. What do you like about the finished piece, and why? 5. What would you do differently if you were to do this again? Why?
GRADING: 1. You chose a photographic image that gives you opportunity to create an original, expressive work of art. 2. Your chosen image is interesting to you and you've explained why in the review question. 2. You answered the questions thoroughly and correctly, using ELEMENTS and PRINCIPLES correctly. DESIGN: 3. Your page space is designed well. SPACE and TEXTURE are well balanced 4. The composition uses design principles to create a sense of UNITY CRAFTSMANSHIP / SKILL: 5. You drew carefully and completed the photo with care to detail. 5. You chose materials and processes well, and used them carefully to develop and complete the composition.
