PROJECT GOALS: 1. to look critically at a work of art and interpret meaning based on visual evidence found within the piece 2. to create an original, imaginative scene using exisiting photographs in creative, new contexts 3. to express an opinion or idea within a work of art that uses images as "found objects" 4. to improve skills of cutting and gluing complex shapes
A PHOTOMONTAGE is a collage made up of parts of photographs that have been cut and pasted into new contexts.
PART 1: LOOK and THINK Look carefully at the five images shown on the links below. For each image, come up with an explanation or interpretation of the art piece based on visual evidence you see within the artwork. Be specific and clear in describing your opinion. Consider: Why do you think the artist made the artwork? What were they trying to say or make you feel? What images did they combine to create original statements? Use the provided sentence format: I think this piece is about…. I think this because….
PART 2: MAKE ART! 1. Collect images that you find intriguing and/or those that relate to a chosen theme. Although you may start out with a random assortment of images, the finished piece cannot be RANDOM. Your finished art needs to have a theme or idea that you can articulate. Collect photos that can be used as backgrounds, or combined with other photos to create a space for your images to inhabit. Create a design that has EMPHASIS on a particularly expressive and important image, and use the rest of the space to balance and support the main idea.
2. Cut the images out very carefully. Remove distracting background space where needed. Cut the background pieces into shapes that go together in a purposeful way.
3. Glue the papers to the cardboard using a glue stick. When all the pieces are in place, paint a thin coat of sealer over the top to unify the surface.
4. Sign the back with your full name, the title of the artwork.
Part 3: Review
Explain the concept or idea being expressed in your artwork. Include descriptions of at least three visual details that help express your idea.
Complete your rubric and turn it in with your assignment.
