PROJECT GOALS: 1. To understand the term juxtoposition 2. To juxtapose two or more images in a way that expresses HARMONY or CONTRAST. 3. To practice safe cutting with X-Acto knives 4. To practice thoughtful craftsmanship in creating a woven paper object 5. To understand the weaving process and know the difference between warp and weft objects"

1. Select two photos that you think would be interesting to juxtapose (position together in a work of art.) The photos should be about 6” square, and both images need to be about the same size. They will be cut into strips and woven together. If the photo is too small, re-assembly is difficult. 2. Cut slits in the first photo, leaving one side of the photo uncut so that the pieces stay together. The slits can be evenly measured or done at random intervals.
3. Cut the second photo into strips. Keep them arranged on the table in order, or mix them up. Weave the strips into the first photo, keeping in mind the parts of the images that are visible as you go along. Use glue or tape to hold each row in place.
4. EXPERIMENT with both the way you weave pieces and the pieces you weave. Try using clear plastic for rows where you want the weft to show more, or “float” the weft over more than one warp strip in places to make a photo visible. Re-order weft strips as needed, and create a design that highlights your idea effectively. Try leaving part of the photo uncut , and weave around it. Weave more than one set of images together.
Review Questions: (Use complete sentences) 1. Describe the two photos you selected to combine. What does each one look like, and how do they relate to each other? Is your piece about HARMONY or CONTRAST? Explain clearly.
2. Describe the choices you made in slicing the weft and warp pieces. If they are all even, why? If they were cut in an uneven way, why? Also, if you added any plastic or changed the order of your strips, explain why.
3. Evaluate the craftsmanship of the piece. What came out well, and why do you think this? What didn’t come out well, and why do you think this? Give examples from the artwork.
Rubric Criteria: IDEA: o The two photos have some relationship to each other and are not combined in a completely random way. o The weaving method used is interesting and thoughtful. DESIGN: o There is enough of each image visible so that an expressive juxtaposition occurs. o The strips are cut in proportions that make sense to the overall design.
CRAFTSMANSHIP: o The pieces were cut with care and attention o The weft pieces are securely attached to the warp.
